Elder Favour Shey is an elder of the Apostolic Church Owe ll a village in Muyuka sub-division. He is married and a father of two kids. He hails from a Muslim background and got converted into Christianity 5years ago thanks to his wife who happened to be an apostolic prior to their marriage. Three months after his conversion, he was made an elder of the church and his wife later on was made a deaconess. He made his living as a cocoa farmer. However, three years ago, he developed bilateral kidney failure. He has been on dialysis for the past three years and was forced to abandon farming and proceeded to opening a provision store which did not last long as he depended on it for his treatment. His wife’s medicine store also closed down for the same reason. He was unable to procure the drugs prescribed to him due to lack of finances. This caused him to go about begging, and his wife moved about selling “koki” , a local dish, to assist him continue his dialysis. Members of his family who used to assist him financially turned their backs at him after a while.
Furthermore, they had outstanding house rents to pay which had accrued from three years ago. When our Liaison Officer spoke with them, they requested financial assistance to continue with the businesses and to pay the rents. The Charity Committee eventually approved the following assistance for him:
– The three years of rents amounting to 200 000 FCFA ($365), after negotiations with the landlord
– A medicine store amounting to 300, 000FCFA ($545).
– Total amount= 500 000FCFA (About $909). Today, the outstanding debts have been paid off and they are managing their business and using the profit to assist his medical situation.
